The basic principles of peacekeeping are:

  1. Consent of the parties,
  2. Impartiality and
  3. Non-use of force except in self-defense and defense of the mandate.

The three principles are described in the 2008 Capstone Doctrine.

Other considerations

The Capstone Doctrine also identified a number of additional success factors for mandate implementation, including legitimacy, credibility and the promotion of national and local ownership.
